We use multiple devices based on price and time line. The fastest IS the Xerox Tektronix Phasers. They are rather expensive now and not a real choice any more for color. In B&W with aftermarket toner they can be quite economical. But since you said On Demand it may be a real quick alternative. The best model is the 7750 for about 10k. The next are ink jet large volume copier/printers. To restrictive as to longevity. What most people use now are Canon/Xerox high speed color copier/printers or small digital presses. These can lead to VERY cheap per book prices. As little as pennies a page. What you are paying for is their expertise and up front costs. Canon/Xerox units only cost about 40k-120k. Not including all the software, maintenance, installation, training. That can easily cost another 30k. I would suggest that you visit a digital pre-press service bureau. That is what they do for a living. Just because you can afford a unit like that does NOT make it economically feasible for printing. The training/time/cost is just to huge. I should know.
