There are many variations of Print On Demand. We use multiple devices based on price and time line. The fastest IS the Xerox Tektronix Phasers. They are rather expensive now and not a real choice any more for color. In B&W with aftermarket toner they can be quite economical. But since you said On Demand it may be a real quick alternative. The best model is the 7750 for about 10k. The next are ink jet large volume copier/printers. To restrictive as to longevity. What most people use now are Canon/Xerox high speed color copier/printers or small digital presses. These can lead to VERY cheap per book prices. As little as pennies a page. What you are paying for is their expertise and up front costs. Canon/Xerox units only cost about 40k-120k. Not including all the software, maintenance, installation, training. That can easily cost another 30k. I would suggest that you visit a digital pre-press service bureau. That is what they do for a living. Just because you can afford a unit like that does NOT make it economically feasible for printing. The training/time/cost is just to huge. I should know. I do this as a living.
