How can we make congress realize they need to live within a budget like families have to?

Short Run Printing

I do not understand how congress can even begin to discuss healthcare reform or anything else when they have the country in debt so deep it will take decades to get out. Families have to live within a budget and can’t print money when they run short, so the government should also make policies and propose changes that do not continue to dig a bigger hole of debt. How do we make congress realize they cannot keep piling on the debt, and enough is enough?

You are 100% correct. Every day I e-mail and call my representatives telling them exactly what you have stated. I close by telling them I will not vote for them in 2010 if they vote yes on health care and bail outs. This is the only way to let your representatives know how you want things handled.

So I’m assuming you’re not in debt for your mortgage or car loan?

That’s akin to borrowing from China and other places that is part of our debt load…

    I don’t think you can.

Even a constitutional amendment requiring congress to balance the budget would never pass because it would be voted on by the same people who can’t control spending now.

Congress doesn’t actually have to live within a budget. They just spend money and pass it on to whoever comes next.

The way democracies go is they tend to prosper, then government officials spend all of the money, then there is a revolution and the government gets overthrown.
