Should I open an LLC for selling my book?

Print On Demand

I am about to publish my book through a print on demand service. The publisher does sell my book and pay me royalties. However, I would like to also sell my book on my own. What would be the best way to do so? Is it through starting an LLC?

There is really no need to have an LLC. Just go sole proprietorship. Do you expect to have a lawsuit from the sale of your book? Then there is really no need to differentiate yourself from your business. Also, are you going to start a business to sell your books? You need to get the proper licensing from your state.

The only reason you’d need to do an LLC is if maybe you will be sued. An LLC acts as a entity for business - with limited ownership - if the entity has fiscal or legal problems - the owenrs might not be held accountable - unless they caused the actions.

If by chance you want someone else to have portions of the proceeds - then setup the LLC.

Otherwise - for tax purposes a sole proprietorship is okay.
